Can anyone identify this strange little creature? It was in the soil, two inches or so deep and was quite eager to return as it kept flipping its bottom half around in a burrowing motion. It measured less than 1/2" long, had underdeveloped/metamorphosing wings and legs and was pretty darn cute with tiny black eyes. It was found on July 1 in Page County. Any ideas?

After a bit of sleuthing, I think it's a Japanese Beetle pupa. This is what it looks like after living in the soil as a grub but before it becomes an adult beetle.
