The Return of a Forest Icon: Restoring the American Chestnut

Once a cornerstone of Appalachian forests, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was nearly wiped out in the 20th century after the introduction of chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica). In this engaging presentation, learn how modern science is working to bring this iconic tree back.

Hosted by The American Chestnut Foundation, the program explores current restoration strategies, including advanced breeding techniques and biotechnology approaches such as recurrent genomic selection. Attendees will gain insight into how research, conservation, and innovation are converging to restore the American chestnut to its native range.

Presenter Bio

Cassie Stark earned her B.S. in Biology from James Madison University, where she began her work in American chestnut restoration through forest management research focused on hybrid chestnut reintroduction in West Virginia. She went on to receive her M.S. in Forest Resources from Penn State University, studying the habitat, conservation, and cultivation of ramps (wild leeks).

Cassie joined The American Chestnut Foundation in 2022 and currently serves as Director of Science Implementation, helping translate cutting-edge research into real-world restoration efforts.
