Sperryville Community Alliance (SCA)

ORMN Project Contact:  Mike Wenger - mike(at)wengerandwenger.com.
 Project Background
The Sperryville Community Alliance (SCA), a non-profit established in 2019, built and maintains a 2.5-mile public walking trail from Sperryville along the South Fork of the Thornton River, with plans to extend it further.  The Alliance has received a grant to develop a master plan for invasive plant controls and habitat restoration along the trail, including informational stops to educate trail walkers on habitat, the importance of native plants, and to engage the public in nature.

ST (Stewardship) Activities with Sperryville Community Alliance (SCA)
Sperryville Trail Restoration
ORMN volunteers will provide technical advice, guidance and training, as well as engage in plant removal and installation.  This activity will help restore the adjacent habitat and stream banks and also help public volunteers understand flora's role in the site ecology and how invasive plants inhibit habitat.
  • Locations: The 2.5-mile trail between Sperryville and Pen Druid.
  • Physical Requirements/Safety Hazards:  Trail restoration may involve exposure to heat, cold, dampness, rain, sun, ticks, poison ivy, snakes and insect bites/stings.  Not accessible to wheelchairs; walking canes and motorized chairs okay if they can navigate gravel.  Accessible bathrooms and parking available.
  • Special Requirements:  None.
  • Time Commitment: Specific work days will be scheduled throughout the year.  Individuals may also work whenever they have time because the public access trail is always open.
