Become a Master Naturalist

Master Naturalist Certification

The process for becoming a certified Virginia Master Naturalist typically takes 6 to 12 months and requires the following:

  • 40 hours of basic training, including classroom sessions and field trips
  • 8 hours of advanced training
  • 40 hours of volunteer service

The Old Rag Chapter has completed four courses of basic training and will have its fifth session beginning early 2012 (click on "Master Naturalist Training" in the "Events" column at right for details).

Location of Classes

2012 Classes will be held on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at the Madison Extension Office.  Generally. classes are held in Madison (possibly at the County Extension office) and in Rappahannock County (possibly at the County Library); field trip locations vary. Class members will be notified about locations.

Instructors

Our instructors are knowledgeable professionals from diverse backgrounds in natural history. Their affiliations include Virginia Departments of Game and Inland Fisheries, Forestry, and Conservation and Recreation; Virginia Cooperative Extension (Virginia Tech); the University of Virginia; and James Madison University.

Cost

For the 2012 session, the cost is $125. Costs may change for future class sessions.

Applying

A course is planned for Spring 2012. Click here for more information on applying to the course. The application period for the 2012 session will open January 1, 2012, and go through February 11, 2012.

Chapter Events

Going Wild in Your Backyard . 2012-02-04 — Our chapter's first wildlife habitat open house (see program) sure to be a big event.  Get it on your list! 

NABA Butterfly Count in Rappahannock County. 2012-07-28 — This is our second annual butterfly count.  Our results are reported to the North American Butterfly Association.  Last year we counted over 1200 butterflies in 40 species. Come join us! 

Master Naturalist Training. Spring 2012 — The next training course is from March 13 - May 29, 2012. Applications accepted Jan. 1 - Feb. 11, 2012. The class is limited to 20 participants.
